What do football and the church have in common?

I knew I would get your attention!  Seriously, "What do football and the church have in common?"  Well, I am watching the Florida/ LSU game and I seem to notice that each team has a coach/leader, a quarterback, and a group of dedicated teammates and an even larger group of committed fans.  Similiarly, the church has a coach/leader - Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:22), a quarterback - the Pastor (I Timothy 3), a group of dedicated teammates - local church (Ephesians 1:23)and an even larger group of committed fans - our cloud of witness' (Hebrews 12:1). As I watch the game, I wonder, Whose committment is deeper?  To be continued...

Of course football is a game, whereas the church is involved in a real war with spiritual powers and eternal ramifications. The analogy is good but my question is this: Despite how much I love football (and you know I do) what is our role as Christians in any competitive sport. I have often pondered this especially with all the negatives that seem to naturally come in a competitive arena (whether it be football, basketball or church league softball). Just how involved should we be as a believer, as a church?? Don't expect a "correct answer" but at least a perspective on it.
